Data Pipeline Architecture
A production competitor monitoring system isn't just a scraper — it's a pipeline. Collection (scheduled scrapers with retry logic and proxy rotation), Processing (normalize prices, match SKUs, calculate deltas), Storage (time-series database for historical trends), and Delivery (dashboards, alerts, reports).
Each layer has its own failure modes. A scraper that doesn't save progress after each batch will lose hours of work on a crash. A matcher that uses only product titles will generate false matches. I build each layer with failure recovery and validation built in.
Anti-Bot: The Arms Race
Amazon, Walmart, and major e-commerce platforms use sophisticated bot detection: fingerprinting, CAPTCHAs, behavioral analysis, and rate limiting. Local scraping with Playwright + stealth plugins works for most sites. For Amazon specifically, cloud scrapers like Apify use residential proxies and browser farms that rotate IPs and mimic real user behavior. The key is knowing when local scraping is sufficient (most sites) and when you need specialized tools (Amazon, heavily protected platforms).
